The French National Regulation Authority (CRE) has approved the long-term capacity calculation methodology on the FR-UK border.
The United Kingdom leaving the European Union on January the 1st of 2021 has made obsolete all previous capacity calculation methodologies on various timeframe between continental Europe and the UK (ex Capacity calculation Region “Channel”).
The Trade and Cooperation Agreement between the European Union and the United Kingdom requires new capacity calculation methodologies for all timeframes to be developed. However, those methodologies won’t be live before several years and the emphasis has been put on the day-ahead timeframe.
The FR-UK cross-border capacity has doubled in one year and RTE needs to keep developing and maintaining its transmission network. In that purpose, RTE developed a long-term capacity calculation methodology on the FR-UK border that has allow a safe and secure operation of the transmission network, even in case of outages of grid elements.
This long-term capacity calculation methodology on the FR-UK border has been approved by the French regulator on Tuesday March 8th and is already live on the border. This methodology will remain in place until a new coordinated capacity calculation on the long-term timeframe is approved between the European Union and the United Kingdom.
